Portland 1/14/10
The rain grounds it’s fingers in dirt, gravel, and garbage bags; returning everything neat to its proper mess.  Like infant arms, eyes reach out windows and windshields through curtains and wiper blades, looking upwards for bigger arms.  This day wishes for something to return it to it’s feet or at the very least, a word of encouragement, higher in pitch than volume.  It’s not the weather, but my wishing for dry that floods Boise this morning.
I exit the hotel lobby passing rooms where small women, like the rain outside; wash-over, rest, and resettle each impression of last night’s stay.  These women will know me better than most, by my mess.  This mess has become the better part of my life.  This life is in constant, grinding motion west.
